The map to the right shows infection rates per 100,000 people across the USA, in a rolling average for the week ending October 8, 2021. Individual counties within each state vary. The map on the Mayo Clinic's website shows how the map varies over time and is continually updated. The darkest areas show infection levels for COVID-19 at 100 cases per 100,000 people or greater.

Delta Variant is a Game Changer

The newest variant of COVID-19, dubbed the Delta Variant is not more dangerous than previous forms of the virus but it spreads more quickly. The World Health Organization recommends social distancing indoors, even for fully vaccinated people.

What Will Happen In Winter?

As of early October 2021, there are many factors that impact how the spread of COVID-19 change in the months ahead. Vaccination rates continue to climb and this is expected to continue as children under 12 will have access to the vaccines. Mandates are being implemented in many large firms and government agencies. At the same time, people spend more time indoors during the winter, there are many indoor events that make social distancing difficult and the protection will weaken for many vaccinated persons until they get boosters. Overall, experts predict that infections will go down by spring baring a new variant.
